Wisdom

Wisdom is a parental commodity that grows over time.

And it comes from unexpected source sometimes, like from Hank, my 8 year old son with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD.

It was a Saturday morning and I was quietly cleaning up.   Suddenly, from the other room, Hank speaks.

“You’re never going to get Zoë to think like you, Mom.”

“You can try and try, but she’s never going to think like you.”  Her brain is different.”

Nothing happened that morning between Zoë and I, but Hank was thinking about us.  It’s not like him to comment on relationships.  I didn’t think he was paying attention to my dynamic with Zoe, but all along, he quietly observed and thought about it. And then quietly remarked about it.

Zoë is in middle school.  We’re going through that middle school drama.  I needed this wisdom.   Profoundly needed it.

Thank you, Hank.   You just helped me…A LOT.   I think about your statement everyday now.
